Essential Stanford Software (ESS)

End of Support for Windows XP

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This means that Microsoft no longer provides security updates or technical support, and as a result, represents a significant security vulnerability. See Microsoft's Support for Window XP is Ending page for more information.

Employees with Windows XP laptops or desktops must migrate to Windows 7 (Enterprise or Ultimate edition) or Windows 8 (Pro or Enterprise edition) no later than April 8, 2014. The University has a site-wide license with Microsoft whereby employees can obtain the latest operating system at no cost for Stanford-owned devices.

Please contact your local IT support staff to discuss your options. You can also call the Stanford IT Service Desk at 650-725-4357 (5-HELP) for general advice and pointers to your local IT support staff.

ESS is a collection of applications that help you plug into the Stanford network (SUNet) and access University computing services safely and securely. Applications are available for both Windows and Macintosh computers.

  • Site-licensed anti-malware software.
  • File transfer software.
  • Automatic software updates for site-licensed Stanford software.
