iPhone and iPad Configuration Instructions for ActiveSync

There are two ways to configure your iPhone or iPad Mail application to sync to your Stanford email account—using an ActiveSync connection or using a standard IMAP connection. An ActiveSync connection pulls in your calendar and contacts in addition to your email. An IMAP connection can sync email messages only.

The easiest way to set up Zimbra Email and Calendar on your iPhone or iPad using an ActiveSync connection is to use Mobile Device Manager (MDM). IT Services strongly recommends using MDM. If, however, you are unable to install MDM please follow the instructions below to configure the iPhone or iPad Mail application to use an ActiveSync connection for email, calendar, and contacts syncing.

Instructions for configuring the Mail application to use IMAP are also available.

  1. From the Home screen go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Tap Add Account.
  3. Select the option for Microsoft Exchange.

  4. Enter the following and then tap Next.
    • Email: your
    • Password: stanford (do not enter your SUNet ID password here)
    • Description: Exchange is entered automatically (you can change this if you wish)

  5. Enter the following and then tap Next.
    • Server: your SUNet
    • Domain: leave blank
    • Username: your SUNet ID
    • Password: your SUNet ID password

  6. Turn the options to ON for the areas you'd like to sync (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders) and then tap Save.

  7. Your Exchange account now appears in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars section. Select it to view the Settings.
  8. Tap Account.
  9. Scroll down and verify that Use SSL is turned ON. and then tap Done.

  10. Important: Adjust the Mail days to sync (default is 3) according to your preferences and then tap Mail to return to the Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings. Some users will want to change this setting, as this default would mean only messages received in the last three days would appear in any of your folders.

Your iPhone or iPad should automatically send and receive mail from your Zimbra account as well as sync to the Zimbra Address Book and Calendar.
