Directory Data Definitions

The data in an LDAP directory is stored in a hierarchy of objects. Frequently the directory hierarchy is described as a tree of objects. The core branches of the LDAP directory tree at Stanford are:

  • The People branch. This branch stores information about people at Stanford.
  • The Accounts branch. This branch stores information about  accounts that people at Stanford have.
  • The Applications branch. This branch store information about applications at Stanford.  A major part of this branch contains information mapping Kerberos principals into distinguished names that are used to control access to the directory. Also stored in this branch of the directory are email address mappings used by the Virtual Email Domain service.
  • The Groups branch. Contains information about Work Groups at Stanford.
