Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) at Stanford

Obtaining Snow Leopard

Stanford faculty, staff, and students can install Snow Leopard on Stanford-owned machines under Stanford's site license. Please see Software Licensing's page for further information.

Those who wish to purchase a copy to install on a personally owned machine can do so through the Stanford-Apple store (available for $29) or at the Stanford Bookstore (available for $29).

Software compatibility

This list will be updated frequently, so please check back often in the first few weeks following Snow Leopard's release.

Essential Stanford Software (ESS)

  • Stanford Desktop Tools: Version 2.5.7, posted 8/27/09 on ESS, is compatible.

  • Sophos Anti-Virus: Version 7.0.5, posted 8/27/09 on ESS, is compatible. Users who already have the 7.x client should already be updated to this version. Users with the 4.x version of the client will need to manually upgrade by downloading the installer from ESS.

  • Fetch: Compatible

  • Adobe Reader 8.x: Compatibility unknown. Version 9.x is verified as compatible. Additional testing is being done with the 8.x version needed for various administrative applications.

Administrative Systems applications

Administrative Systems is evaluating compatibility with various administrative applications like Oracle Financials, Peoplesoft, and Reportmart. Results will be posted here when available. People who need to use these applications should not upgrade to Mac OS X v10.6 at this time.

Other applications

  • OpenAFS: Version 1.4.11 is compatible.

  • Cisco VPN Client: Not compatible, although anecdotal reports are that it will connect and function, but periodically generate kernel panics. Cisco has indicated it is not supported for use on Mac OS X v10.6 and that they likely won't produce a 10.6-compatible version. See Note below.

Note: Snow Leopard offers native support for Cisco IPSec VPN connections. IT Services will test and evaluate this and potentially offer a configuration utility so this can be used with the Stanford VPN service.

  • SSL VPN Client: Compatible

  • PGP: Not compatible. PGP indicates they plan to release a compatible version of their product in Q4 of this year.

  • iCal: iCal 4.0, included with Snow Leopard, appears to be compatible with Stanford Calendar. Additional testing is underway and any special documentation or issues will be posted to the Stanford Email & Calendar web site.
